Sophie Kost2025-01-07This is our third stay at Montana. We love the location (and that you switch off as it's out of mobile range!), the river (floating down the horseshoe bend is so relaxing) and the rules that ensure respect to all campers. There is no camp kitchen, which isn't a problem, but good to know in your planning (we collect hot water to wash up at camp from the laundry). Looking forward to coming back again.Zeke Ewen2025-01-02We just recently camped here as a group for the first time. After going to many sites in the past, this is by far the best place we have ever stayed at. The staff were truly amazing, welcoming, and the grounds and amenities were fantastic. This will be the first time we re-book a year ahead.Sarah Heggaton2024-12-26We stayed at Montana for two nights on the way up to Dargo and two nights on the way back to Melbourne to break up the trip for our old girls (van & dog) and very glad we did! We stayed at a Powered site on the way up, but after a walk around the beautiful park, we requested to change to an Unpowered site for the way back, with a view to the river. Fiona is so sweet and was very happy to allocate us the site we had our hearts set on. We thankfully stayed before the Christmas crowds, so had one whole section to ourselves which was just a dream. The sites are lovely and large, so I can see why Montana get booked out over the busy times as it wouldn’t feel overcrowded because of the spaces. A magical place. Our city dog even got to sit and watch the kangaroos one evening which was lots of fun! Dave was very sweet to talk to and you can see how much they both love the place. Very grateful they share it with us! We will be back soon, thanks for a great stay, Sarah, Ian, Kobe & Olive 🚛Jayne Campbell2024-11-25Looking forward to our trip after Christmas. This is the best place to go camping. So relaxing and enjoyable for the whole family. Dave and Fiona are great hosts. Recommend for any family. They also cater for dogs too which we love.Roger Detering2024-11-17Fantastic location with descent sized camping sites, clean and fresh amenities and relaxing atmosphere. We like the choice of powered sites or the use of prime River frontage for off grid camping. Keep coming back.Craig Ellis2024-11-17Brilliant location, beautiful site, clean amenities and the managers Dave and Fiona were just delightful. If you are after a quiet stay that is respectful, clean and dog friendly, i would recommend here. The surrounds are just so relaxing, the communal fire pit brings everyone together. Thank you Dave & Fiona, keep up the great work in assuring we all have a great and peaceful stay. Montana on the Macalister is a picturesque campground that runs along the banks of the Macalister River, with easy access for swimming, fishing and relaxing in the water. Located in central Gippsland – north of Glenmaggie and just south of Licola – giving easy access to the Victorian high country for those wanting to explore, or a short drive through to Heyfield, Maffra, and Traralgon to one of the many local attractions.
The campground is ideally suited for individual families looking for a quiet, clean, relaxing place to camp on a powered site and with 14 acres of lawn along 500 metres of river frontage, those who do not need power will find plenty of space and still have easy access to the amenities. Facilities include showers, toilets, hot water, drinking water. We do not have a camp kitchen or barbecues.
Larger clubs and groups are also welcome at any time and are able to book a section of the grounds or the complete campground in off peak times. Of course, conditions do apply and advanced bookings are essential.
Montana on the Macalister is an affordable place to camp. On the main holidays, numbers are limited to enable families to enjoy time out from the crowds, so the kids can play in a safe and friendly environment.
Montana is a pet friendly park all year round, not just in the off peak times, although the number of pets may be limited in busy times.
